New Netflix Series Trailer Digs Into Real-Life Wisconsin Murder Cover-Up

On December 18th, Netflix will release its latest documentary-style show, Making a Murderer—a ten-episode series focused on Steven Avery of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, who may or may not have been framed for murder. Today Netflix released the trailer for its Serial-esque docuseries, and it's intense.

Directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos said they spent 10 years exploring Avery's complicated case. In 1985, Avery was convicted of assaulting a prominent local woman, Penny Bernstein. He spent 18 years in prison for it, but was eventually exonerated by DNA testing. Once he was free, he sued the city for $36 million in damages for his time in prison.

Then, after two years of freedom, he was accused of murdering 25-year-old Teresa Halbach. Was the city framing him because they didn’t want to pay him? Did he actually kill her? The final line of the trailer is also the core myth of all true-crime TV: “The truth will come out.”
