A 71-year-old man in the Back of the Yards neighborhood was shot to death while answering the door on Sunday morning, police say.

Fredell Bryant heard a knock on the front door of his home in the 5200 block of South Green Street around 6 a.m., according to authorities. He answered it and was shot by an assailant at the doorstep, NBC5 reports.

"We heard him ask, 'Who is it?' at the door. No response. Then he said 'Who is it?' real loud, nothing. And I guess he was going to open the door to see who it was and we heard two loud shots," Bryant's son-in-law, Ron Dean told NBC5.

The father of nine and retired construction worker, who'd lived on the same block for 40 years was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he later died.

His family is struggling to understand the "senseless" killing of Bryant, who they say kept to himself and was a respected member of the community. Nothing was taken from the house.

No suspects are in custody.
