Chi-Town Rising, Chicago's first big New Years Eve event on the new Riverwalk, is not going to be as free as promoters once billed it to be. The event is now charging $119 for some tickets and $150 for others, labelled General Admission.

An "Early Bird" ticket special at $99 a piece has already sold out, according to the ticket website Event Sprout.

Chi-Town Rising announced what it called an “A-list” lineup of obscure bands, includingThe O’My’s, Kweku Collins and The NuBlu Band, among others, earlier this month, with no mention of the pricey tickets.

The privately-funded event is aimed to boost Chicago tourism around the holidays and become a tradition that could make the city a destination for New Year's Eve, similar to New York City. It remains to be seen how the event will compare with other, cheaper show options, including John Oliver and Mucca Pazza.
