The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Cook County, in effect until 3 p.m. Monday, which warns of “[a] mix of freezing rain, snow, and sleet;” a a quarter-inch of ice on basically everything, especially in inland areas; and winds of up to 60 mph.
“This will make travel very hazardous or impossible,” the warning concludes.
More than 60 flights at Midway, and more than 265 flights at O’Hare, have been canceled due to the weather, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. Travelers should expect delays.
Midway’s canceled flight number may be significantly higher than 60 at this point—The Sun-Times reports that the airport has canceled upwards of 300 flights.
If you prefer the human interest angle, here’s my personal story of the storm: When I went to get my morning coffee, what appeared to be ice sand was pouring from the sky. It was sharp and hurt my face.
