A great way to cheer yourself up during this dreary January weather is by following a few of Chicago's animal shelters on Instagram. The sweet pictures might inspire you to adopt an adorable new friend, or at least look into volunteering for a shelter. And since space can be tight for animal shelters in the winter, you might decide there's no time like the present to adopt a furry friend.

PAWS Chicago

PAWS is one of Chicago's best-known no-kill pet adoption shelters and also runs a spray/neuter clinic. If you have time, browse through their listings of the cats and dogs available for adoption. It is hard to look without wanting to take one home with you! They post pictures of cute animals who've been adopted on their Instagram page:

Anti-Cruelty Society

If you wander through River North frequently, you've probably noticed the Anti-Cruelty's large building on LaSalle Street. They also post adorable cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and rats available for adoption on their Instagram feed:

Chicago Animal Care and Control

The City of Chicago's official shelter posts pictures of adoptable pets on their Instagram feed. You can go visit the animals before adoption at 2741 S. Western Ave.:

ALIVE Rescue

ALIVE has many wonderful cats and dogs available for adoption and they do a great job of keeping their followers updated on Instagram:
