A student at Illinois Institute of Technology was beaten to death by a fellow student early Thursday, after an argument on the university’s Bronzeville campus, according to police.

Jermiron Morris, 36, was found at 5 a.m., bleeding from the face, in a parking lot next to the school’s Keating Sports Center, police told reporters. It appeared his attacker had beaten him with a tree branch, according to the Tribune.

Morris, an undergraduate at the school, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A suspect, a 43-year-old IIT student, has been taken into custody. Morris may have been with his attacker the evening before he was found.

Morris was the recipient of IIT’s Presidential Scholarship, according to the IIT website. He transferred into IIT in 2013, after working as a trucker and getting his associate’s degree in logistics at Richard J. Daley College, according to reports from the Tribune and the Sun-Times.
