Police are warning of a rash of thefts in River North this month, in which someone is smashing the windows of cars parked in Near North Side parking garages to steal the valuables people have left inside.

The smash-and-grabs all took place in the early morning, in River North, according to a police alert sent Monday evening. The thefts were reported in the 0-100 Block of East Ontario Street on Jan. 25, in the 0-100 block of West Kinzie Street on Jan. 25, in the 0-100 block of West Chestnut Avenue on Feb. 9, and in the 700 block of North Rush Street on Feb. 7 and 19.

Police recommend that parking garage owners keep the perimeters of their garages well lit, secure doors and windows, report suspicious activity immediately, and save and make copies of any video surveillance if they are hit by thieves.
