A man has been charged with first-degree murder for the fatal Wednesday night shooting in the gym of a River North high rise.
Reggie Daniel, 48, turned himself in to the police Thursday, and was charged with shooting and killing financial trader Darrin Joss, 45, in the eighth-floor gym of a high rise in the 500 block of West Kinzie Street.
Both men lived in the building where the shooting occurred, according to the Tribune—a luxury apartment complex where rents start at more than $1,500 for a studio, based on the building’s website.
“After a verbal altercation, Daniel shot the victim in the head and chest and fled the scene,” Chicago police said in a statement.
Witness Aaron Snyder corroborated, telling the Tribune the two men got in a “screaming match” over a woman in the gym, and that “[Daniel] just hung around [Joss] staring at him on the treadmill."
Joss’s dad, Kenneth Joss, told the Tribune that, “[Joss] was a good kid and he enjoyed life."
Daniel’s 49-year-old sister, meanwhile, told the Tribune she doesn’t believe her brother shot Joss. Daniel’s sister also told the Tribune her brother had been a victim of gun violence himself. Daniel is in a wheelchair, she said, due to a gunshot wound he suffered over 20 years ago.
