The Commission on Chicago Landmarks, the board overseeing sites in Chicago with protected status, approved a plan that would create 38 artist lofts in Pullman.

President Barack Obama made the Far South Side neighborhood a national monument last February. The plan will cost some $15 million and involves renovating two large existing buildings on Langley Avenue between 111th and 112th streets, Curbed reports. Rent will be between $400 and $1,200 a month for artists, who have to apply for residences.

The project has been a source of controversy in the neighborhood. As reported by South Side Weekly, it has split the historic neighborhood along familiar lines on issues surrounding development, gentrification and preservation. According to a timeline on the project's website, they don't expect to begin construction for another year and some change.
