On Friday, the city's bike sharing program will be giving out free 24-hour passes to anyone who asks in celebration of Earth Day. It’s one of a few freebies during the week of April 22 to 29, which Divvy has designated “Divvy Week.”

To hitch a free ride, cyclists just need to swipe their debit or credit card and ask for a 24-hour pass. There’s a small catch, though: only rides less than 30 minutes between stations will be free. Longer rides will be subject to a usage fee, unless you stop at a Divvy station at the 30-minute mark and request a new ride code.

Divvy skeptics should note that Divvy has so far been extremely safe, even safer than biking on a personal bike—there have been no crashes fatalities associated with the bike-sharing program since it began in 2013. There's also a clear environmental benefit to biking. According to the EPA, 2 million metric tons of carbon could be saved if everyone in the U.S. cut their car travel in half.
