A 13-year-old girl was charged Tuesday with fatally stabbing a 15-year-old girl on Saturday night, using a knife provided by the 13-year-old's mother. The mother, 35-year-old Tamika Gayden, was also charged Tuesday with a felony count of first-degree murder and a felony count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, police said.

In a hearing on Tuesday, one witness reported that the 13-year-old said, “I killed her, I killed her” after a fight in which De'Kayla Dansberry was killed, according to prosecutors. Another witness saw the 13-year-old wiping blood off her knife after the attack. A witness has also identified the 13-year-old in a video of the attack obtained by police.

The 13-year-old is a seventh grader with no criminal background, the Tribune reports, and Dansberry was a popular track athlete at Johnson College Prep.

The reason for the fight was unknown, but Dansberry's father, Julian Glanton, speculated that it was "kid stuff" that "shouldn't have escalated" to the Sun-Times.

Update, 2:30 p.m. Gayden appeared in bond court today, where she was ordered held without bail. Afterwards, sheriff's deputies had to separate Dansberry's family from Gayden and her family after "some pushing" occurred between the two parties, the Tribune reports.
