The North Avenue pedestrian bridge over Lake Shore Drive will reopen Thursday after being closed for renovations for almost three months. The $1 million renovation project is on schedule and on budget, according to Chicago Department of Transportation spokesperson Michael Claffey.
The renovations, which required the city to close the 268-foot bridge back on April 11, were meant to extend the life of the bridge, built in 1940. Claffey said it was "showing signs of deterioration" before it was updated.
The reopening is great news for Chicagoans, because the bridge is the fourth most popular point of access to the Lakefront, according to the Tribune. More than 8,000 people using it on a typical weekend day.
