Update, July 15:
The owners of L’Patron have shuttered the taqueria’s original location, according to a Facebook post from Thursday. As noted in the original post, the new location is just a couple of miles distance southwest from the original.

L'Patron, the Logan Square critical- and popular-favorite taqueria, has announced plans to open a second location—but there could be a hitch.

Co-owner/chef Ernesto Gonzalez told the Tribune on Tuesday the original restaurant may be forced to shutter after an 80% rent increase. "We're trying to negotiate but it doesn't look too good," the Topolobampo veteran told the paper. Gonzalez and his team will decide by the end of the month whether or not if they will close the original location (2815 W Diversey Ave.) by the end of August.

But the new location at least sounds like cause for celebration. Located at 3749 W Fullerton Ave., just a couple of miles southwest of the original location, the new spot will boast a back patio, a larger dining room, more parking and—perhaps best of all—new menu items. Five in total, including a steak burger with steak fries, according to the Tribune. "We will explode your taste buds, and I guarantee it!" the restaurant posted on Facebook.

The Fullerton outpost will launch with a soft opening on Thursday that will feature 99-cent carne asada tacos (!). The official, grand opening will be Saturday.

Like everyone else, Chicagoist is a big L'Patron fan. We included their al pastor in our roundup of the city's 12 best tacos and ranked the poblano rajas among our top ten burritos. So the prospect of two locations, even if only for a brief span, is music to our ears.
