Watch A Shark Give Birth To A Shark Pup At The Shedd Aquarium

Shark Week's passed us by, but that's no reason to let breaking shark news go unnoticed, right? Five blacktop reef sharks were recently born at the Shedd Aquarium, the marine life center announced Thursday, and one of those births was caught on camera—which is apparently pretty rare in shark circles.

In honor of Shark Awareness Day, which is Thursday, the aquarium shared the footage (which is, admittedly, a little hard to see), shot May 18. The four other pups were born on June 11. The five new pups bring the aquarium's blacktop reef shark total to 12, though the staff is expecting one more shark to give birth as well. All the new shark babies are the result of the aquarium's breeding program, and their gestations marked the first time the Shedd has had three adult blacktop reef sharks pregnant simultaneously, according to a press release.

It's been a good week ocean baby-wise for the Shedd: Wednesday the aquarium officially named its dolphin calf Kukdlaa. No word yet on monikers for the little sharks.
