Serious thunderstorms are rolling into a few places south of the city Thursday afternoon, but the heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service is going strong. A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for nearby Lake County, Indiana while the excessive heat warning for several counties in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin remains in effect.

The heat warning, which goes from noon Thursday through 7 p.m., affects Cook and several surrounding counties and stems from heat index readings that are expected to range from 100 to as high as 110 degrees. On Friday, thunderstorms may bring things down 10 degrees or so, but it's still going to feel pretty toasty.

Cooling centers are open at six locations around the city from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Otherwise, experts recommend staying out of the sun, staying hydrated and taking cool showers or baths to beat the heat. If you want to make sure an elderly relative, friend or neighbor is OK, well-being checks are also available by dialing 311.

And as if the unbearable heat and sweatiness weren't enough: The weather is also behind Metra announcing they'd be moving with 10-to15-minute delays while temperatures remain high.
