A 20-year-old man died after jumping into the Chicago River late on Thursday, according to police.

Chicago Police Department Marine Units located the man in the river, downtown near the Columbus Drive Bridge. The department had fielded multiple calls around 11:35 p.m. from different locations that a person was in the water. Divers pulled out the man, who was submerged underwater, and applied CPR and used a defibrillator. He was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead.

The man appears to have intentionally entered the water. He was with friends and wanted to “go for a swim,” Chicago police said.
