Vic Mensa was accused of retail theft at a Barneys store by police in Los Angeles on Thursday, the Chicago rapper claimed on social media. Mensa said on Snapchat that he and friends in fact spent $4000 at the shop.
“I go into Barneys, spend four racks and get accused of stealing.” The officers apparently could not identify what exactly was stolen, he said. “And on top of that, they don’t even know what they think we stole,” he added.
“You can't be a young black man out here doing anything legal, positive. You still get treated like a criminal," Mensa said in the video. "We don't have to steal shit, man. We could buy nicer shit than you buy for your wife right now," he said, pointing the phone camera back at police officers.
Mensa has been a frequent outspoken critic of police overreach. His standout performance last weekend at Lollapalooza featured dancers in riot gear while Mensa performed “16 Shots,” which directly references the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald.
