A 10-year-old boy was shot on Monday night in North Lawndale, according to Chicago police.
The boy, identified by reports as Tavon Tanner, was standing on the sidewalk in front of his home, in the 3900 block of West Polk Street, near South Pulaski Road, while his family was on the front porch. At about 10:15 p.m., family members heard shots but did not see the offender, a police spokeswoman told Chicagoist. Washington had been shot in the back; he was taken to Mt. Sinai Medical Center and listed in critical condition.
Tavon’s mother, Mellanie Washington, 39, heard at least five shots, ABC 7 reports. She said it took a moment to realize what had happened."I didn't even know (Tavon) was next to me until he fell backwards through the doorway when I was crawling in the house," she said told ABC. "He was talking and we didn't even know he was shot at first, until we saw blood on his shirt."'
Tavon’s twin sister reportedly shouted, “Twin, don’t leave me!”
Police do not have a suspect in custody as of Tuesday morning.
