As Thursday's heat index soared past 100 degrees, Chicagoans took the opportunity to enjoy the fleeting days of summer while battling the weather.
Hundreds flocked to North Avenue Beach, Navy Pier's first ever outdoor ice skating rink, and Millennium Park. Meanwhile, some Southwest Side residents tried to cool off in high-powered sprays of water from freshly opened fire hydrants, while others enjoyed local Latinx street food, such as fresh-cut fruit and chili powder and fruit-flavored shaved ice. Photographer Tyler LaRiviere was around town to captures some photos of the city's struggle to keep from melting Thursday afternoon.
