A hit-and-run driver nearly decimated a Divvy bike station on the South Side, authorities said.
The station, near South Damen Avenue and West Garfield Boulevard, appeared to have been hit by a car on Sunday night, according to Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman Michael Claffey. Crews fixed up the station and it is back up and running now, he said.
Beverley resident James Shaw shared photos of the destruction with Chicagoist on Monday afternoon after he noticed it while commuting into the Loop on a Divvy bicycle at 7:30 a.m. Monday. Shaw also noted that there was a car nearby with damage and its rear window blown out, but it's unclear whether this car was involved in the collision with the Divvy station.
In the photos, one of which was also posted to Reddit, un-docked Divvy bicycles are strewn across the lawn several feet away from an otherwise empty Divvy station. The bike share bicycles are normally attached to their Divvy station docks, and Divvy users must swipe a credit card or Divvy membership key at the station kiosk in order to remove them from the station.
