A high school student was fatally shot in a drive-by yesterday morning—and his friend's mother says the teen was on the street because the school turned him away for not wearing part of the uniform. [Update: A spokesperson for Excel Academy of South Shore says the student left of his own volition. More details below]

A CPD spokesperson said that the shooting occurred at 10:20 a.m., on the 2600 block of 75th Street in South Shore. The 18-year-old, who was not identified, was crossing the street when a black vehicle drove by and someone inside fired at him. The young man, who was struck in the hand and abdomen, was taken to Northwestern Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim's friend's mother, Liz Doss, told Fox 32 that he and her son had been sent back home from Excel Academy of South Shore for not wearing bow ties, part of the school's uniform. She went to pick them up and, two blocks from the school, the gunfire erupted.

"They both turned and run, my son tried to come back for me and I said just keep running," Doss described. She added, "I stayed out there with him and I took my shirt off, put pressure to his stomach, I feel like I failed because he still died."

CPD says the investigation is ongoing. We have reached out to Excel Academy and Camelot Education, which runs the school, and will update with their comments.

Update: A spokesperson for Excel Academy said the student was not turned away from the school for his uniform and left of his own volition just after 8 a.m. He added, "We're heartsick over the young man's death."
