Human remains were discovered on Friday morning in the McKinley Park lagoon, a police spokesperson confirmed with Chicagoist. The remains included a severed head found in a bag, police Supt. Eddie Johnson said earlier today.

The body parts were found around 10 a.m. this morning by a private contractor who was working in the lagoon, according to police. A death investigation is underway.

According to reports, Johnson said the remains appear to be those of an African-American. The victim's sex was not initially clear. Johnson was speaking at a press conference related to another matter.

McKinley Park is located at 2210 W. Pershing Rd. The lagoon is located on the northeast side of the park.
