Man Killed, Woman Wounded In Eisenhower Expressway Shooting [Updated]

A shooting Thursday morning on the westbound Eisenhower Expressway left one man dead and a woman critically wounded, according to Illinois State Police. The shooting prompted authorities to shut down a stretch of all outbound lanes on I-290 as police investigated.

The shooting happened just before 6 a.m. on westbound I-290, near Laramie Avenue. The victims, who were riding together in a white Jeep, were transported to Stroger Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. Family members told CBS that the male victim was Johnathon Ortiz, an “aspiring rapper” who went by John D.O.E and the female victim was his girlfriend, Alexis Garcia, both 22.

Crews shut down all traffic westbound traffic lanes on Thursday morning between California and Central Avenues. while investigators worked the scene. As of 9:30 a.m., lanes had been reopened, ISP told Chicagoist.

There was a rash of expressway shootings this summer, including three within one week in May.
