Photos: Rebar Madness, When Will Truck Drivers Learn?

Chicago has a ton of bridges. We go over them, under them, and sometimes a semi truck gets stuck under them during rush hour, honking up traffic for miles around. Take the North Avenue Metra underpass for example. Anyone who commutes this way knows that at least once every couple of months, a large truck is going to get wedged under the bridge. We can’t even get mad anymore. We know it’s coming, we phone into work, we’re going to be late again.

Wednesday morning was especially impressive, as a demolition truck hauling steel rebar managed to get just one wedged between the beams underneath the bridge and yanked the whole tangle of steel out.

Wednesday afternoon was also not a great time for large trucks, as this Crete semi learned the very hard way while trying to drive underneath the L tracks at Lake Street and Sacramento Avenue:

Hey truck, see those numbers posted on the bridge? If the numbers are smaller than on your truck, you and the ol' rig won’t make it out unscathed.

Hey, we’re just trying to help keep the city moving!
