A rideshare driver has swindled passengers twice in recent weeks in the South Loop, police warn.

In both instances, the driver told his passenger that the transaction failed to process once they arrived at the rider’s destination. The driver told the victims he needed to manually enter the user’s credit or debit card info, including the rider’s PIN number, then quickly withdrew funds from an ATM before the victim was aware.

The alert did not specify the name of the rideshare service used. In each case, the same type of vehicle that was shown requested on the app was the one that arrived, according to police.

The most recent crime happened in the 800 block of South Wabash Avenue on Oct. 18 at 2:10 a.m. Another incident occurred on Sept. 29, at 11:22 p.m., in the 2000 block of South Michigan Avenue.

Police advise passengers to make sure that the vehicle type, driver photo and license plate match the information on their rideshare app; and to secure backup credit and debit information. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at (312) 747-8384.
