NBA star Derrick Rose and two accused friends were cleared of all charges on Wednesday in a civil rape lawsuit, the Associated Press reports. The jury of six women and two men deliberated for about three hours before rendering a not liable verdict.
The complainant Jane Doe, Rose’s onetime girlfriend, alleged that Rose and two of his friends— Ryan Allen and Randall Hampton—gang-raped her in 2013 at her L.A. residence while she was passed out from drinking. Prosecutors also alleged that Doe was drugged by the men.
Contentious closing arguments on Tuesday capped off what was sometimes a heated trial, with both sides accusing another of lying, reported Diana Moskovitz.
As Moskovitz, of Deadspin, wrote:
"In Doe’s account, she got home, vomited, and passed out on her bed in her dress. She woke up with her dress around her neck and lube everywhere, trying to figure out what had happened to her. According to Rose and his friends, the woman let them in and then agreed to have sex with all three of them, even calling the shots as to how things would go in the bedroom, as lawyer Mark Baute said in closing arguments."
"I am thankful that the jury understood and agreed with me," Rose said in a statement to the AP. "This experience and my sensitivity to it was deep. I am ready to put this behind me and focus on my family and career."
Doe will consider appeal options, said Waukeen McCoy, Doe's attorney.
The case drew further controversy after a federal court ruled that Doe would have to reveal her identity in court—due to the civil rather than criminal nature of the trial—along with the fact that defense attorneys attempted to make Doe's sexual history an issue at trial. During deposition, Rose said he took his used condom with him—which he later said NBA players are taught to do, so that sexual partners don't attempt to impregnate themselves. He also reportedly had to ask his attorneys what "consent" means.
The oddities continued on even after the trail, as Rose was seen posing for photos with his attorney and various jurors:

News surfaced in late September that the LAPD had opened a criminal investigation for gang rape. That investigation is still ongoing. LAPD detective Nadine Hernandez, one of the investigators, was found shot last week and was pronounced dead at an LA-area hospital. The coroner's office ruled her death a suicide.
