Frequent Chance the Rapper collaborator Nico Segal, of the local group the Social Experiment, announced on Friday that he has abandoned his longtime alias Donnie Trumpet.
"What began as a joke, a silly play on words, is not funny anymore," the Social Experiment member said in a note posted on Segal's Twitter and Facebook. "I don’t want to be connected to Trump’s hateful tone or his hateful message. I don’t want to be misrepresented or misunderstood. Trump's beliefs are not mine."

Chance was quick with a shout out for Segal's decision:
Proud of my brother @nicosegal Good Man

It's sad enough that our president-elect is rolling back the decades on immigration, climate change, reproductive justice, minority protections and the national economic outlook. I guess we can add delicious puns to the list—even ones that are clearly post-structuralist-minded and obviously not intended as a Trump endorsement. But we understand Segal's concern, and it's definitely the right call.
Truth be told, though, silly us didn't even register the play on words until Segal ditched it today—which is probably music to the ears of punny headline-weary readers, anyway. Anybody else miss the connection this whole time?
