From rare, deep-sea-dwelling creatures to fossil brains to meteorites, the Field Museum holds over 30 million specimens and artifacts tucked away on shelves, cabinets, glass jars, and acres of wooden drawers. They’re significant not only because of their number, but also because of the stories they tell.

Now the Field Museum is giving people a small peek at its collection in an extraordinary exhibition, “Specimens: Unlocking the Secrets of Life.”

Visitors to the exhibition can not only see the specimens but can hear them as well. Fun, scientifically based monologues were written, allowing almost every specimen to tell of their story. The people of Chicago were then invited to perform these monologues, with the best performances made part of the exhibition.

Stories include a rock n' roll snake, an aristocratic squirrel or a conspiracy-busting millipede, just to name a few and the result makes for a more participatory, immersive experience.

Specimens: Unlocking the Secrets of Life ends January 7th 2018. To learn more about the exhibition and buy tickets you can visit the website here
