Tom Petty is a national treasure. It wouldn't be an understatement to claim that he's done an excellent job of maintaining 40 years or so of managing to write songs that are uniquely his own yet universally accessible and timeless, and most of those years have been spent partnering with his longtime band The Heartbreakers.
Petty's gift is accessing that rare mixture of finding the voice of the everyman and pairing it with hooks that stick in your brain. In the '70s he was a rule breaker, in the '80s he was a visionary (especially when pairing his music with memorable visuals for MTV), in the '90s he became a legend, and in the new millennium he's managed to continue to crank out music that feels relevant and bigger than the moment in time each song might occupy upon its release.
To celebrate the group's 40 years of songwriting, the band is embarking upon a U.S. tour next year, stopping at Wrigley Field on June 29, 2017.
News that Petty and his stalwart band of Heartbreakers would be celebrating their 40th anniversary together broke earlier this year with the announcement that the band's catalog would be reissued on vinyl in an extensive box set. Said box set just happens to be available starting today, the same day as this tour announcement! Ah, synergy.
In preparation for this tour we highly recommend checking out Warren Zanes' book Petty: The Biography. It features tons of interviews with all the principles as well as unusually candid access to Petty himself. It'll blow your mind. And it will make a wonderful companion to a pair of concert tickets!
Tickets will go on sale for the Chicago stop of this tour on Friday, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m.
