Just before Christmas, lovers of greasy spoon diner food got an awful anti-present: The Diner Grill in North Center was the victim of a massive fire on Christmas Eve. The restaurant, which is more than 70 years old, was badly damaged and is currently closed.

Any fan of diner food was familiar with the Diner Grill, a 24-hour spot famous for the terrifying-looking "Slinger," a combination of hash browns, burger patties, onions, chili, eggs and cheese.

There's hope that the Slinger will rise again, however. Eater Chicago reports that the owner of the Diner Grill, 80 year old Arnold DeMar, will re-open the restaurant in a few months after rebuilding.
