Nary a real estate or commercial development passes by in Logan Square without bringing with it a host of requisite “death of Logan” handwringing. Get ready to grip your mitts because the tenants set to take over the retail portion at the former Mega Mall site certainly fit the bill: Xsport Fitness, Jewel and Starbucks are all prominently featured on a new promotional brochure from the development’s broker.

Jewel has been rumored as a retail anchor for the multi-million dollar Logan’s Crossing—as the development is to be named—since late September. And there’s no doubt the ever-growing neighborhood could use another supermarket. But they did have a decent one in the nearby, now-shuttered Sunrise Fresh Market—which, in similarly gentrification-tinged news, could soon sit in the shadow of a residential tower.

And the symbolism of a Starbucks setting shop almost directly across from New Wave Coffee, one of the first harbingers of the then-New Logan, certainly won’t be lost on any longtime residents.

But as the brochure also makes explicit, in terms of residential real estate in particular, Logan is nothing nowadays if not quicksilver. Hey, at least, the Double Door might be coming right around the bend, right?

The very early stages of demolition of the old Mega Mall, at 2500 N. Milwaukee Ave., began early this month. Along with the retail tenants, Logan's Crossing is expected to include 220 housing unites and office space.
