Three people were killed in an-early morning crash on the Eisenhower Expressway on Tuesday morning. A third person is in critical condition.
The single-car crash happened around 2:15 a.m. on the outbound I-290 lanes near Western Ave., according to Illinois State Police. Two people were killed on the scene. A third person was taken to Stroger Hospital and pronounced dead. A fourth victim is in critical condition as of Monday morning at Stroger. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the identities of the fatalities.
Outbound lanes were shut down for about four hours while crews investigated. Two lanes were opened around 6:30 a.m.
According to ABC7, a semi truck got stuck underneath nearby train tracks, tearing off some of its roof, while trying to swerve from the closure; and two others got stuck under the Jackson overpass near Rockwell.
Investigators have not said whether or not rain or fog played a role in the initial crash. Footage of the car from ABC shows the vehicle totaled almost beyond recognition.
