It was another particularly violent weekend in Chicago, as six people were fatally shot and at least 47 more were wounded by gunfire between Friday evening and Monday morning, the Sun-Times reports. After the warm weekend, violence in January is so far outpacing the same month a year ago at this point.
At least 228 people have been shot so far in Chicago this year, and there have been at least 42 homicides, according to the Tribune. Both of those figures represent jumps from the same time last year, despite January of 2016 being the deadliest January since 2000.
After registering its most violent year in nearly two decades, Chicago got off to another lethal start over the long New Year’s weekend, in which 55 people were shot.
In just a 24-hour period this weekend, between Saturday and Sunday, at lest 29 people were injured and three men were killed in separate shootings, according to the Trib.
There were three multiple-victim shootings, in which 10 people were wounded, on Sunday alone. One shootings occurred at around 9 a.m. on Sunday morning in West town, when three people were hit while sitting in a parked car, a police spokesperson told Chicagoist.
