In early January, Honey Butter Fried Chicken was the first Chicago restaurant to join a new "Sanctuary Restaurant" movement. Sanctuary Restaurants affirm their support for diversity and immigrant communities, and the Sanctuary Restaurant movement provides resources for consumers and restaurant workers. In just a few months, Chicago has gone from one Sanctuary Restaurant to more than 20.

The project is a collaboration between Restaurant Opportunities Centers United and Presente. According to a statement released today, more than 300 restaurants nationwide have joined up. The following Chicagoland Restaurants are currently in their database:

Edzo’s Burger Shop
Amazing Kale Burger
Just Crumbs
Sovereign Tap
Brightwok Kitchen
Be Leaf
Cafe Jumping Bean
Nitecap Coffee Bar
Honey Butter Fried Chicken
Bistro Campagne
Jerry’s
The Local Pizzeria
R Public House
The Common Cup
Charmers Cafe
Hopewell Brewing Co.
Lost Lake
Reno
Smallfry
Parson’s Chicken and Fish
Replay Lincoln Park

That's a big jump in a couple months, and we suspect that more restaurants will jump on board as the changes in immigration policy come online in the coming weeks and months. It's also worth noting that the entire Land and Sea Department restaurant group, as well as all of Rick Bayless's local restaurants, have joined the movement.

The nationwide map of Sanctuary Restaurants is below.
