An Amtrak train derailed in the South Loop Monday morning after three cars came off the tracks as the train approached Union Station.
No injuries were reported in the derailment, which took place around 10:30 a.m. The train was a Lake Shore Limited, arriving in Chicago after an overnight trip from Boston and New York. An Amtrak spokesman told the Tribune that the derailment happened while the train was changing tracks at a slow speed. Since none of the train cars tipped over, Amtrak was able to move its 197 passengers to other cars that were still on the tracks. It was unclear as of Monday afternoon what specifically caused the derailment.
This is the second Amtrak train derailment in three days; last week, an Amtrak derailed near Penn Station in New York City.
Some people on the train Tweeted after the derailment took place:
If you're going to #derail, at least do it entering #Chicago #UnionStation at 7mph. #Amtrak #449 pic.twitter.com/P1FpxVsp5E
