A dog who was shot in the head last week after escaping from her family's yard will require surgery to have the bullet lodged in her skull removed.

The dog, Luna, was reportedly running in an alley in Marquette Park Thursday, near the 2800 block of West Marquette Road, when a group of boys saw her and a 15-year-old shot her, according to police. The teen, who told police that he shot the dog because he was afraid she was dangerous, was charged as a juvenile (in such cases, police don't release the names of the alleged offenders) with five felonies, including gun offenses and aggravated cruelty to animals and criminal damage of a domestic animal.

Police took Luna to Animal Care and Control, where her owners found her and brought her to an emergency vet, according to NBC. After a tough weekend for the dog, Luna was slated for surgery, according to the Chicagoland Rescue Intervention & Support Program, which has been sharing updates on her health status on Facebook.

The family is also raising money to pay for Luna's surgery. So far 117 people have donated over $4,000, above the $3,000 goal.
