Jewel-Osco is coming to Woodlawn, a Southeast Side neighborhood that has long been considered by many a food desert for its lack of healthy grocery shopping options.

The full-service grocery store and drive-through pharmacy is slated for the corner of 61st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, blocks from the CTA Cottage Grove Green Line station and the future location of the Obama Presidential Center and library. The store will bring 200 new jobs to Woodlawn, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a press release.

“Today we are taking the next major step in the renaissance and resurgence happening across Woodlawn,” Emanuel said. “This new grocery store will bring fresh food options to a community that is witnessing an unprecedented level of investment, growth and progress.”

The store will be about 48,000-square-feet and will open in late 2018.
