Man Shot By Armed Robber In River North Early Friday Among 11 Overnight Shootings

A man was shot early Friday morning in River North after he resisted an attempted robbery, according to authorities.

The 26-year-old man was reportedly sitting in a car in the 100 block of West Erie Street at 4:15 a.m., according to police, when another car pulled up beside his and one of two people in the car threatened to rob him with a handgun. The man refused to give them his property, and the gunman shot him in the leg as he attempted to run away.

The man was taken to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in good condition, according to police. No one is in custody in the shooting.

The shooting was one of at least 11 shootings, two of them fatal, that took place between Thursday evening and Friday morning, according to preliminary police reports. A 19-year-old man was shot in the leg on the Near West Side; three black men, ages 34, 21 and 35 were shot during a party on the Far North Side, in the 7400 block of North Western Avenue, and all were taken to hospitals in stable condition; a 25-year-old man was shot in the 4500 block of West Congress Thursday evening; a 19-year-old man was shot in the knee in the 700 block of South Albany Avenue in a drive-by shooting; a 20-something-year-old black man was fatally shot in the head in the South Loop around 8:52 pm. Thursday; and a 29-year-old man was fatally shot in the head in the 6900 block of South Indiana around 7:35 p.m. Thursday.

There were at least two other Thursday evening shootings, according to police, one in Grand Crossing and one in the South Loop.
