A Chicago police officer shot two men late on Tuesday night in Montclare after they opened fire, according to police.
Police were driving near the 2900 block of North Newland Avenue at around 11:54 p.m. on Tuesday when they saw two men in grey sedan shoot in their direction and hit another car, according to police. Officers followed them through an alley where an "armed confrontation" ensued, police said in a preliminary statement. One officer fired shots and hit both men, police said.
The two men were taken to area hospitals. A commander for the Chicago Fire Department told the Tribune that one man listed in critical condition at Loyola University Medical Center; and the second was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Police said no officers were hurt.
Two weapons were recovered at the scene, according to the police department.
Police noted in a statement that the shooting was the fourth incident since Friday in which officers were fired upon. It was also the third time since that day that a person had been shot by an officer, including a 17-year-old who was fatally shot in Washington Park after allegedly firing at police.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative duties for 30 days, per department policy.
