A man died Monday afternoon trying to rescue an 11-year-old boy who fell out of a motor boat on Lake Michigan Monday afternoon near 63rd Street Beach.

Authorities responded to the lakefront spot around 12:45 p.m. after receiving a call about a child in need of rescuing. They recovered the body of a man in the water, who was in "extremely critical" condition, as the Chicago Fire Department tweeted. The 11-year-old was taken to Comer Children's Hospital nearby in good condition.

According to the Tribune, the man appears to be the father of three children who were all on the boat when the child fell in the water. Lifeguards heard the child and the man go into the water, and rowed out in a boat to help the child. Shortly after fire responders attempted to rescue the man, who was not wearing a jacket and was found under the water by helicopter divers.
