At a court appearance on Tuesday, prosecutors said the teen accused of brutally hacking to death an Uber driver with a knife and machete had committed 40 disciplinary offenses while awaiting trial in juvenile detention, according to the Tribune.
Eliza Wasni, 16, faces charges of first degree murder and vehicular carjacking, among other charges, in the Memorial Day killing of Wilmette man Grant Nelson, in Lincolnwood. She pleaded not guilty last week to the charges last week.
Prosecutor Diane Sheridan described some of Wasni's behavior in court: the girl tried to get a "jagged" shard from a "hygiene bucket" she had smashed into her cell; and had pushed, punched, kicked and, at one point, bitten guards, she reportedly said.
Wasni allegedly killed Nelson with a knife and a machete that she had stolen from Walmart just prior to the slaying. She attacked Nelson—who was working after as an Uber driver—without provocation after she hailed the car using the rideshare app, according to the charges. Nelson called 911 shortly before he bled to death. Police found a girl that matched the description he provided hiding behind a nearby building, Lincolnwood police said in May.
The family of the victim has filed a lawsuit against Walmart, alleging that the store was negligent in not questioning Wasni as she walked out of the store with the blades.
