Three people were wounded after a shooting broke out on the Dan Ryan Expressway early Friday morning.

Someone in a white SUV at around 1:06 a.m. opened fire at another vehicle during a "traffic altercation" on the southbound express lanes of I-94, near 43rd Street, according to Illinois State Police. At least two people in the vehicle were struck, one in the stomach, another in the hand, police said.

ABC7 reports that occupants in both vehicles fired at one another, and the SUV was "riddled with bullet holes." The Tribune reports that at least 10 bullet holes could be seen.

A third shooting victim, who said he was shot on the expressway, later walked into Mercy Hospital and Medical Center for treatment. Police said it wasn't clear if the third victim was involved.

Express lanes reopened at 4:26 a.m., according to police.
