Video of a highly publicized shooting outside the now-shuttered Funky Buddha Lounge from 2014 shows an off-duty sheriff's deputy use a wounded man—who had been armed moments earlier—as a shield while he appears to be fired upon. The deputy was reportedly out of ammunition as the incident was still going on.
The deputy, Michael Raines, was uninjured but died the following year from an overdose of fentanyl-laced heroin after he spiraled downward due to post-traumatic stress disorder following the shooting, according to the Sun-Times. The man who points a weapon at Raines, Mario Orta, pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The man who was shot and held by Raines, Fernando Lopez, survived the shooting. Lopez is accused of attempted murder, among other charges, and will go before a court in August.
The mayhem erupted after Lopez brandished a gun (police say he also fired into the air) outside the nightclub. Raines, who was at the nearby Richard's Bar, jumps into the scene. He is seen shooting the armed Lopez, then rushing back toward him near the club entrance after Lopez staggers away. That's when Raines crouched behind Lopez.
Four-and-a-half minutes of surveillance video obtained by the Sun-Times shows the shootout/standoff.
