We heard forecast grumblings since last week that the Great American Eclipse could be marred by party-pooper cloud cover, and sure enough Chicagoans were quite literally left looking for silver linings in the sky on Monday afternoon. By about noon, it seemed like the solar eclipse in Chicago (what with its promise of a none-too-shabby totality percentage between 86 and 87 percent) was shaping up to be a bust. But the clouds parted and thinned enough between then and 2:45 p.m., when the eclipse passed, local time. And the 1:19 p.m. peak didn't disappoint from our vantage, as thousands flooded the Adler Planetarium, Chicago parks and other watch parties.
Cue the Bonnie Tyler and check out some of our favorite watcher-of-the-skies documentation, at ground level and high above it. And if you're still not convinced of its success, consider Exhibit Tom Skilling.
