Cubs first baseman and cancer survivor Anthony Rizzo got a little bit emotional on Tuesday at Lurie Children's Hospital, where he cut the ribbon on a new waiting room and commemorated the $3.5 million donation that his foundation committed in May.
With his family nearby, Rizzo—who regularly visits sick children at the hospital—choked back some tears as he spoke about his commitment to the the hospital.
"I remember sitting with my mom saying we were going to do this ten years ago," Rizzo said. "And this is just a little step toward our mission, but to be able to give back and do this type of work is so much bigger than winning the World Series."
"My family's been through it. There are so many families going through it. This is as real as it gets in life."

Rizzo's foundation in May announced two endowment funds as part of a $3.5 million donation to the hospital. One offers grants to families struggling with finances related to children's cancer treatment; the other supports oncology specialists at Lurie.
