PAWS Chicago Rescued Dozens Of Animals From Houston. Here's How You Can Help

With Houston still reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, the city desperately needed to clear space in its animal shelters to accommodate all the newly displaced pets. One of the groups that stepped up to help relocate those animals was Chicago's very own PAWS chapter—which brought back more than three dozen dogs and cats from the Houston area over the weekend.
Needless to say, the outreach doesn't stop there, and the 43 animals with which PAWS returned still need plenty of TLC. Some have already been placed into foster homes, but other animals are still in need of foster families. And six Harvey rescues were available to adopt through PAWS' North Shore Adoption Center (1616 Deerfield Rd.) as of Wednesday afternoon. (Most of little ones will need time to mend before becoming available for full-fledged permanent adoption, as the majority of Houston-area transplants are recovering from ringworm, heartworm, upper respiratory infections or other ailments, according to Julia Poukatch, a Communications Associate with PAWS Chicago.)
But if you're handy with a pup or cat and would like to consider fostering, you should check out the shelter's info page on ways to help and how to sign up. No doubt that space for rescues is often at a premium at in-demand shelters.
You can donate to the shelter's relief efforts here, and also follow along for updates to see when the furry ones become available to forever homes.
