A man was beaten, robbed and thrown into Lake Michigan near Shedd Aquarium early on Wednesday morning, according to police.

A 23-year-old man was walking along a path in the 1200 block of South Lake Shore Drive at around 12:01 a.m. when a group of several men and one woman came up to him and started beating him, police said.

The robbers took the victim's backpack and cellphone then threw him into the lake before taking off. The man was able to get out of the lake on his own, police said.

The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Police did not have anyone in custody as of Wednesday morning.
