.. or at least they go less than they used to? Or something? Wait, what's going on here? 9 out of the 10 largest museums in the city saw a decline in visitors last year, but one had a huge leap. The Museum of Science & Industry saw a 34% increase in attendance. People must have really liked that video game exhibit they had last year!
The increase in attendance was enough for Chicago to boast the overall museum attendance was up, even though it was really down everywhere except for the Museum of Science & Industry. Check it -
| Museum | Attendance Change |
| Chicago Historical Society | -53% |
| Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum | -11% |
| Art Institute of Chicago | -9% |
| DuSable Museum | -5% |
| John G. Shedd Aquarium | -3% |
| Field Museum | -2% |
| Adler Planetarium | -1% |
| Mexican Fine Arts Center | -1% |
| Museum of Contemporary Art | -1% |
| Museum of Science and Industry | +34% |

Weekend Diversion: Night Of The Ponies

Damn, maybe they do need to add those moving cars on tracks that they have at Epcot like I suggested in comments to the Navy Pier post... are people really too lazy to walk through a museum these days?
Video game exhibit? Do you live in a cave...it's probably the result of the Body Worlds exhibit

Get a clue....
I think that the museums here are second to none, and soooooo accessible! I go when all the major exhibits come into town.
It's too bad though we've let our children solder earpieces to their heads so they can talk to Chad and Trixie and we get them watching DVDs in the back of our SUVs and let them play PSPs in the resteurants, just to keep them quiet.
Your "families" are raising blind mindless unthinking sheep (re: Republicans), but that's okay. I've got passes to most of the good museums, and I can go anytime, and the less noisy uninterested vapid-staring kids bumping around and wandering dully in the halls, the more art for me!
Yippie! It's a win-win for me!
Let me know the next time you're going, folks, and we'll all go to the Artist's Diner and look trendy as we buy extra triple-triple mocha decafs with extra brown sugar and cream together - but, please, no kids.
oh, right. who could forget about that little exhibit. it's not like we never wrote about it. eep! sorry!
The Field Museum is a great museum, but for the last year or so, they've been remodeling, and most of the exhibits are closed.
/I'd like to kick the ass of the fucker who set THAT deal up. What a jackass. It's as bad as the stupid Jewel at Clark/Division remodeling and moving their products around every few years so you can't find anything. Guess what? I don't shop at Jewel and I'm having a tough time justifying renewing my Field membership (although I will - the Field Museum is so cool.)
I don't see how anyone can afford to go to the Shedd Aquarium. Not to mention that all the cool stuff costs extra to see even on the free days at the museums. That's on top of the ripoff parking fees. It just proves my personal belief that THEY only want rich republican kids to have a good education.
You have to become a member. It's like $80 or something like that, it's good for a whole year and usually includes all the exhibits and special shows.
/Well worth it, even if you only go twice
Note to families with kids. If you see a tall guy by himself, actually LOOKING at the exhibits, keep your goddamned kids away from him. He doesn't like your little, noisy brats.
I read here.Come on my net museum...
body worlds was awesome. also increasing membership incentives could boost attendance.
Nobody goes to museums because they're to crowded.
You gotta love the Peggy Notebart Museum. Bulldozing nature to build a museum about... well, nature.
That's irony for you.
Next up: Let's bulldoze Soldier Field (for good this time) and build a museum to Chicago football.
Might I recommend, to those complaining about museum fees, the Great Kids Museum Passport program. 11 museums, including the Shedd, all for the cost of walking over to the library.
The library pass thing only gets you in the door. If you want to see any of the "special" exhibits, you have to pay out the ass.
It's best to just become a member.
