It's weird to think I've only really been aware of Lady GaGa since inauguration week when I heard "Just Dance" in a D.C. bar and marveled at how the room exploded. While I'm slightly bummed the Fame Monster EP shows the freaky vocal mannerisms and awesome lyrics of "Bad Romance" to be an interesting musical hiccup instead of the harbinger of a bold new direction -- sonically the EP hews incredibly closely to the more straightforward pop of her debut than the interesting tics and treats I was hoping for -- I still think she's just fucking fascinating in that art damaged NYC underground disco freakpunkrighton kind of way.

This is what happens when Marcus and I have a serious philosophical discussion about Hello Kitty.

Had Jonze and Eggers been honest in just what audience their adaptation of a beloved and twisted children's book truly was, the end result would've looked like this.

This man is our hero. The bravery he shows in exposing this criminal prejudice against beards should be applauded on the floor of the United Nations. [Language NSFW]

The Prairie Carrtel are preparing for the "official" release of their debut full-length (which is already available here) and have released this video, directed by Peng Lei, for their song "No Light Escapes Here." The teaser's a weird mixture of political imagery overlaid by whimsy and the result is analogous to the group's sound; it's catchy and poppy but there's a definite aggression running under the surface.

FOX 32 Defends Airing Albert Beating Video

A few weeks ago, Fox 32 made waves by making available the video of a brawl that killed student Derrion Albert, which was captured on cell phone by a witness. This week, Fox 32 VP/News Director Carol Fowler addressed the issue of the video, purchased for $250, including the process behind the decisions to purchase and air the video.

Chicago's sports teams seem to have a knack for drafting players with unique talents. Bulls rookie James Johnson showed off his YouTube-worthy skill -- break dancing! In this clip posted by Dime Magazine, he shows off his windmill skillz at the 2009 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot. He's not the only local rookie to grace YouTube for his off the field antics. Bears rookie Jerron Gilbert has made a bigger name for himself on account of his leaping ability than his play on the field thus far.

We admit we've always wanted a keytar of our very own, but were never sure we'd be able to pull it off. Well move over keytar, the QChord is here and anyone can play!

Weis, Daley Ask For Help ID'ing Suspects From Brawl

Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis has asked the public for help in identifying more of the teens involved in last week's violent brawl that left four teens injured and one, 16-year-old Derrion Albert, dead. At a press conference yesterday, Weis said, "Almost all of the offenders in this case were students, or were former students from [Fenger]. You kids know who they are. Please call in. You've got three people who probably need to be arrested because they had contact and struck Derrion." Weis added that he's asked for help from the U.S. Secret Service to aid in enhancing the available video of the brawl with hopes that it will make identification easier.

We've been hearing this damn song so much we reckoned it was about time to check out the original video for it again. Also, file under "everything seems epic when this song is playing."

Tom Schraeder, a longtime local favorite musician of ours, is throwing a little release party tonight at Beat Kitchen. A cassette tape release party. We knew once vinyl started getting big again magnetic tape couldn't be far behind! The details for the show are in the video below, backed by Schraeder performance of a live tune just for you.

Look, I think we can all agree that Perez Hilton is a talentless twit, but his name as sponsor on the marquee should NOT keep you from seeing Ladyhawke at The Metro tomorrow night! Her self-titled debut garnered a well deserved spot on our music best-of list last year, and it still hasn't worn out it's welcome on ye olde tankPOD. Watch the magic in action.

Now, will any fans of Creed show the courage to come out and admit their mistakes too?

It was only a matter of time before someone gave the remix treatment to Marcus' temper tantrum triggered by squirrels getting at the wires and bringing down our publishing platform. Since I have to deal with his outburts I'd like to thank the remix creator for at least giving me something to slip into DJ sets and make all the hassle worthwhile.

Today's Diversion shows the importance of community, of working together, and in uniting to create one tripped out video.

A little known fact is that I'm the one that often has to talk Marcus down off the ledge when our network goes down, or stories get screwed up, or he pours too much milk on his cereal "making it all soggy so [he] can't eat it now!" I know: me, the voice of reason? Scary. Anyway, I thought I'd share some video of how Marcus reacted earlier today upon getting some distressing news so you can see what I have to work with sometimes...

Last weekend, resting on the couch after DJing until 5 in the a.m., we happened to pop in a DVD of a flick much favored in our younger years and now we just can't get the theme song out of our head. Maybe we can get it stuck in yours too?

See, apparently Hook wasn't a complete disaster. Electronic musician Pogo makes the flick watchable as he manipulates it to match his track "Bangarang."

The tech website Gizmodo has been a home this week for Alinea's Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas as they offered their opinions on food and technology. Part of that has included live-streaming menu planning sessions and kitchen prep. Tonight they'll be broadcasting dinner service live from the kitchen starting at 8:45 p.m. To view, remember this link or visit Gizmodo.

This is EXACTLY what we needed to see given today's incredibly depressing weather.

We were hoping to bring you the Mannequin Men's wacky fun loving video for "Massage" of the Chicago rockers' latest, Lose Your Illusion Too, but technical difficulties (we assume you'd actually like to hear the song too) prevent us from doing so. As a fall back, please enjoy this other just-released video for "Cream Rises" of the same album. It's not as goofy, but it does feature a bunch of dancing, drinking, and debauchery ... stuff we're looking forward to getting down to as soon as we skip out off the office this afternoon.

Yes, it's snobby, but we kinda hate when mainstream media covers music. Trying to sell our moms on our favorite bands (especially 16 years and five records into their careers) is just silly, but if this appearance on CBS' Sunday Morning helps Wilco sell a few thousand more records, we'll allow it. But the Black Eyed Peas segue at the beginning is just dumb, and you can't tell us it's not.

We still maintain the Transformers movies would suck much less with humans as Autobots/Decepticons instead of some weird insect-looking CGI crap.

It's only a matter of time before your cat starts DEMANDING cat massage!

This has been floating around the Chicagoist offices for a little while now (thanks, Alex!) but only makes its way to the Flashback desk this morning (thanks, Rob!). It's worth the wait - all ten minutes of this James Fitzpatrick-hosted travelogue movie reel (think Travel Channel meets Walter Winchell) is fascinating not just for how much has changed in 60 years - but also in how familiar almost everything here remains.

Both Grub Street Chicago and LTHForum were abuzz yesterday by the video above featuring moto's Homaro Cantu and Ben Roche working their dark arts of the kitchen. The video shows Cantu and Roche brewing crumbled Dunkin' Donuts for cops, serving pizza-flavored photos to pizza deliverymen and making ice cream that doesn't melt at room temperature. Cantu asks in the LTH thread, "When was the last time we had a real paradigm shift in food? Get ready, because its about to happen and every top tier food company ceo is going to be scratching their heads trying to figure out what Moto has been up to with the crazy NDA's (non-disclosure agreements) and secrecy. Its almost time to let the ticking bomb go off. Tick tock tick tock tick tock..." Ellipses his.

The Muppets hit Detroit and team up with The Electric Six. Mayhem ensues.

Seriously, watch this whole thing. It is so worth it. Tell me it doesn't totally make you want to go!

Really, the title says it all.

In light of yesterday's mid-air mishap, we feel it's important to go over the fundamntals of in-flight safety. Consider this a PSA.
