While our White Sox managed to tie the KC Royals in the AL Central basement earlier this week, the Cubs are quickly closing in on the other end of the standings.
Ted Lilly had another strong outing for the Cubs, who beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 Wednesday night.
With the win -- combined with the Milwaukee Brewers' loss -- moved the Cubs to within just two games of first in the NL Central. The Cubs also now sit just 1/2 game behind the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card hunt.
The Cubs' 31-17 record since June 1 is the best in the majors, following a bit of a rough start to the season. Was Lou Piniella's rant really the catalyst?
With the Cubs right in the thick of the playoff hunt and the trading deadline rapidly approaching, Cubs fans now anxiously await what moves the Cubs will make to improve their team for the stretch run. They added catcher Jason Kendall last week, but was that their only move? They could use another bat -- and there just happens to be one for sale on the other side of town.
Oh, and it looks like Kerry Wood might rejoin the team after initial success in his minor league rehab. That should certainly help out the bullpen.
Can the Cubs climb their way into first place, and if so how soon? Or will the curse that's plagued the Cubs get the best of them once again?

There is no curse. the only curse was the one cubs players put on themselves when they thought of themselves as "cubbies" and "lovable losers." those days are gone...Lou Piniella was what this team needed to get back on track. I'm cautiously optimistic, but GO CUBS.
and adding DYE to this team would PHENOMENAL. Even though i really do like what Floyd brings.
The only reason the Cubs are successful is because Hendry is no longer making on-field decisions. The fact is, since the end of May, Lou has figured out who can play and who can't (Barrett, Murton, Izturis). If the radio people would stop patting Hendry on the back for being Kenny Williams circa 2005, they would see this.
Don't worry eric, i see it, and so do most cubs fans.
I too remain cautiously optimistic. I'm not entirely sure I want Jermaine Dye either and not because he's a White Sock. He's a great player but I think we'd have to give up way too much to get him and I'm not willing to do that. At some point, you have to deal with what you have. If someone was injured, I'd say go after him but even with Fragile Floyd, we still have a glut of guys who can play both CF and RF both on the roster and in the minors.

Well, Dye put on a clinic last night at the plate for interested parties. His home run in the first inning was a classic at-bat where he waited for his pitch and just put it into play. He seems to be rounding into shape after his early season struggles. I wish the same could be said for Iguchi and Uribe, the double play combo with no range. The Tigers feasted on the hole between Gooch and Konerko last night.
